Hi,
I'd like to know which insurance is recommended / necessary when renting a car in the US. The insurances offered additonally seem quite expensive... Thanks C. |

I rented my first car this summer for a on the road around Clifornia, Nevada, Utah and Arizona. I suggest you at least a CDW insurance. Generally speaking I try to imagine a medium situation (accident with no people injured) and to protect myself from that. Under this point of view just a CDW insurance looks fine. Thanks C. There are better options Some annual travel insurance policies provide cover for CDW and SLI as part of the policy Its possible to arrange the rental through a European agancy such as holiday autos that includes all necessary insurance Either will be cheaper than paying for CDW at the rental desk and they'll give more protection Keith |

Car Rental insurance?
First see what coverage your credit card provides. The best options
are a Gold or Platinum Visa card. Then see what options your personal insurance provides. Buy the car rental insurance only to cover the wholes. You are smart to question these. Others have posted suggestions on credit
card coverage for insurance as well as looking for all-inclusive rates. But note that rental car insurance is what is known in the US auto sales industry as a "pack" - a grossly overpriced add-on whose prime purpose is to overcome the cost giveaways of phony lower prices. One way or the other be protected by your own insurance, credit card coverage or getting it on a deal because if you don't, the rental places have two additional ways to get it out of you: 1) They pressure you to buy it or try to force you to pay a higher rate (unless you can be forceful enough yourself) 2) If you have an accident, they will bill you for artificially high repair bills, inflated "loss of use" charges and other things. No, I do not have a particular beef with the rental companies and rented almost weekly for years when traveling on business. But you can read about these things in consumer magazines. Car Rental insurance?
Thanks to all for your tips. I have now done a fair bit of comparison
between booking a car / insurance direct in the US or from here (I live in Germany). I have now found that US quotes usually come without insurance, and that additional insurance adds a substantial amount (somewhere between $14-25 p. day on top). However, I found that I can actually get a a better package booking from a German agent which *includes* insurance (and I get a choice of *minimum* or "all-inclusive" packages). The credit card actually only covers 30 days, which is fine for most, but I want to stay longer. Thanks again! C. |

Thanks This depends heavily on any coverage you have now for auto insurance and what benefits your credit cards offer. Call your credit card issuers to see if they offer any coverage for rental cars. Do you have liability and collision insurance already? If so, check with your insurance agent to see what's involved with covering you while you drive a rental car. |
