good day
my advice is to drop NYC from your list the best way would be to drive BUT remember in general I advise across US east/west takes 5 days north/south 24 hours Alamo.com has the best deal on one way trips I would fly to LA rent the car drive over the east cost ending in Las Vegas drop car and fly to New Orleans rerent a car drive the south ending in Miami fly back to LA and home You can spend two weeks in each area My general travel rules plan for a day or half day of rest each week if it be just walking the downtown shopping or seeing the views Do not put too much on the plate if you can get more time do it we (family) go to Australia every 6-7 years and for US we find 7 weeks min most prefer 12 as being best value for the money hope this gives you some good ideas Nic wrote: Hi there. First post, be gentle :-) I am from Melbourne, Australia and will be travelling to the USA in September/October this year with my boyfriend. Just wondering how you would recommend travelling around domestically? I'm guessing options are bus, plane and hire car. The kind of areas we want to cover are LA, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Yosemite National Park, New Orleans, Miami and NYC. Our timeframe is about a month, so any recommendations would be appreciated! My general travel rules plan for a day or
half day of rest each week That's a good point; on a 30 day trip you may get exhausted unless you plan for some rest days to recharge your batteries. Rick Steves (who has a travel show on PBS) calls it "taking a vacation from your vacation." Thanks, Nic You will probably need to rent cars at a couple of locations and fly between them. The major issue is to determine if you are going to the cities mentioned or are going to the areas that they typify. For example, I would never rent a car for a trip to New Orleans. On occasion I have driven to New Orleans and I immediately find a moderate price place to dump the car for several days. Parking is expensive and difficult. However, if I wanted to visit the plantations along river road or visit Cajun country I would need a car and would rent one for a couple of days. The same consideration applies to Miami & New York with a car being a bit more useful in Miami if you want off the beach areas. The western portion is more complicated. A car is difficult in San Francisco but necessary for trips a bit out of the city which are recommended. A car isn't needed for Vegas but if you want to visit the Grand Canyon you will find one useful. If you fly into San Francisco you might visit the city for a few days and then get a car and travel around then depart for other locations in the west. In any case end your western car portion in the city where you start. drop off charges will kill you otherwise. Check on flight arrangements within the US that are connected to your international flight. There may be significant savings available. |

This depends on your budget, but certainly bus, train, and rail transportation is available to you on your trip. |

So many detailed replies, thank you all so much! Will be printing these out as a reference for sure! Sounds like a very complicated itinerary involving many types of transport will need to come into focus in the next few months. Thanks especially for the advice on driving times - distance doesn't always give an accurate idea of how long a trip will take, so it's good to hear it from people who've been there before. Also, for the advice on hurricanes! Not something we in the southern states of Aus have to worry about, so a big thanks! :-) -- Nic ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Nic's Profile: http://travelforums.org/forums/member.php?userid=578 View this thread: http://travelforums.org/forums/showthread.php?t=63510 This post was submitted via http://www.TravelForums.org |

Those are the same thing. And in general they are either not available or a very bad idea. Yes, the train is fine between New York and Washington, or even between my hick town and Chicago ... but between 99% of end destinations it is simply not available. Doug McDonald |
