And the current system makes them better off at no cost to the people who choose not to use their pass or can't get on a bus? What about pensioners who are too disabled to get on a bus at all? That's a different problem Like I say, the system is discriminatory In what way? and wasteful. just like all social benefits, if it doesn't match your political view of "need" it can be shown to be wasteful. tim I've just seen that, at 65+, I'm about to get free entry into Pompeii, Herculaneum etc. next month. Well done Italy! but somebody employed by the mafia will still charge you EURO 5 or more to protect your car in the car park. Cheapy train ticket from Sorrento. :-)) Very cunning! Pick pockets at the station? :-) -- Martin in Zuid Holland Since I got done for the first time ever in Malaga a few years ago (and never ever in the Morocco/Jordan swathe of over 50 years of travels) my body has become inviolate (for pickpocketing, anyway!). For any interested, a day pass on the Sorrento/Naples circuit railway is a few Euros and entry into Pompeii, Herculaneum etc. is free for 65+. That saves a couple some 100 Euros over the local day trips and thus provides for a couple of splendid meals! the web site says over 65s half price and at 22 euro for a combined ticket I can't get the saving above 44 Euro tim |

...a member of an EU state, and have ID to prove it, you can travel free on public transport in Budapest. Just back from there. Worked great. Also got me free rides on the scheduled city river boat, and train trips to Pecs and back for the cost of the seat reservations. The only transport I had to pay for was the children's railway in the Buda Hills. One slight glitch: the checkers on the metro stand rather close to the top of the escalators. After being waved through, you don't have much time to get your passport back in your pocket before you're on your way down. I worried about dropping it into the guts of the escalator machinery. (Many of the escalators at the big stations are unusually fast, you need to get your balance before stepping on one). BTW does Hungary have ANY fire regulations for tourist accommodation? Otherwise well-constructed and well-restored places seemed like total deathtraps. You could easily get stuck the wrong side of a very strong door with no emergency override on a complex lock and not a single extinguisher to help. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- e m a i l : j a c k @ c a m p i n . m e . u k Jack Campin, 11 Third Street, Newtongrange, Midlothian EH22 4PU, Scotland mobile 07800 739 557 http://www.campin.me.uk Twitter: JackCampin |

...a member of an EU state, and have ID to prove it, you can travel free on public transport in Budapest. In Denmark in 2003 you used to get a reduced fare (50% ?) on public transport, and free or reduced entrance to museums and sites. In Italy one can apply for a reduced fare on public transport, depending on the place, based on age and income. For instance anybody over 65 can get unlimited PT in entire Lombardy for 699 eur/year (vs more than 1000 eur for anybody else, but disabled which pay 80 or 10 eur/year according to disability irrespective of age but with some income limitation). In Milan the yearly PT card for aged people is 300 eur/year instead of 330 (but 200 if one is over 65 and has a "normalized income" between 16000 and 20000 eur, and 10 eur for 4 years if the income is below 16000 per year). On the other way Prime Minister Renzi has suppressed the free entrance to state museums for aged people to give it to youngsters between 18 and 25. |
