Default Recommendations on Puglia, Italy

I'm thinking of taking a villa in Puglia, near Cisternino, with my
family (sons 3 and 5). I read the Lonely Planet which suggested it
might be a bit unfriendly and that though the beaches are lovely there
is some urban sprawl.

What is Puglia like? Is it a good place for a family holiday? - We
don't want nightlife, but like lovely scenery a good beach, yummy food
and a child friendly attitude in restaurants, hotels etc.

Love to hear from anyone who can give me some reviews - positive or
negative!

Thanks

Cisternino is really nice, but the nearby city of Martina Franca is
fairly nasty, so avoid it. From Cisternino you can gaze across the
landscape riddled with Trulli and ancient olive trees. Very cool!

The area is nice, but probably about half an hours drive from the
water, and there are no good beaches as such nearby. There are some
places where the locals go swimming, but they are not particularly
beautiful. Apparently there are some private beaches, but I never went
to them.

Also about 45 minutes drive away is Ostuni, the white city, which you
can see from miles away. It's quite pretty, and has a good view of the
region. A really nice place.

You will definitely need a car for this region. There is virtually no
other way to get around. As with anywhere in Italy, there is plenty of
good food, and the Italians will take good care of you and your kids.

Also, english is not widely spoken in the area either, but as you are
staying at a villa, it should not be a big problem.
