The era of FORMAL NIGHTS is fading rapidly...

So, what's YOUR take on why cruise lines continue to have Formal Night? --Tom Tom, I don't have have an answer to that. Just an opinion. I think its just been part of the tradition for so long they (Cruise Lines) don't give any thought to discontinuing it. I think lines like NCl are starting to notice that the older cruise based passengers are being replaced by younger people who don't want to get dressed in Formal Attire. Thus giving passengers the option of Formal or Casual. The generations that are cruising now didn't grow up in the era of Suits & Ties everyday. The ones who did grow up in that era are no longer the majority of passengers today. Except maybe on HAL or Cunard. Somebody posted earlier that Formal Night was a good revenue maker for the Photos they sell. The photographers like the gift shop folks are not employees of the cruise line but a vendor. The only revenue the cruise lines see is their rental space lease price. So there goes that idea. |

And even if it is, I find it hard to believe that the cruise line would not get a cut of their sales. I know the art auction folks are a vendor but had no idea about the photographers or gift shops. My guess (only a guess, albeit an educated guess from a business perspective) is that they pay the photographers a minimum fee, and pocket the majority of the photo sales. If it wasn't highly profitable, they'd figure out how to make it profitable. Let's say they started from the perspective of doing their own photos way in the past. The only reason you "job it out" to a third party is that they're even cheaper... meaning you make even more money. I think formal night photos are HIGHLY lucrative. --Tom |

When they have formal nights on the ship, they usually have the captain's party, which after 45 cruises we do not even go to,rather sit and have a quiet drink and listen to some soft music. They can keep their couple free watered down drinks,we wil buy ours and enjoy them more cruise lover At the next captains party try requesting a glass of wine or bottle of beer rather than one of the pre mixed drinks that have been sitting there for an hour. |

I did both on the last two RCCL (Legend and Voyager). It took a little longer to get them, but they still came. About the same time we finished the watered down rum punch they gave us. |

I think it's the other way around - it's the older folks who are more resistant to dressing up. Just my opinion...based on what's been said on rtc and from personal observations. Lee |

The cruise lines do not receive just a "rental space lease price". It is definitely in the cruise lines best interest for the photography to sell lots of photos. I won't miss formal nights and won't sail on a line that insists on that dress code, yet even on the most laid back ship I'll wear a tweed jacket to evening meals. Tweed in the Caribbean? That, I can't see. Perhaps a nice linen sport coat or something like that. Tweed just screams winter and cold weather to me. Lee |
