Default Casual vs Informal...what's the difference?

I was on a cruise forum reading about "what do I wear for informal nights?".
There seems to be yet another "type" of cruise dress? Formal (2 nights
of the 7 on the Grand Princess). That I understand. But, what's the
difference between casual and informal nights? Can you give me an example
for each of these two nights? And...NO JEANS whatsoever in the dining rooms
PERIOD, right? It'll be tough to convince my born and raised, die-hard
Texan, but I'll manage

For informal, think semi-formal. Jacket, with or without tie.

Casual = shoes required.
Informal = shoes and socks required.
Formal = socks must match.

Hi Monica,

Usually Casual or sometimes referred to as Resort Casual means:
Slacks, Jeans or Skirts -- no shorts or t-shirts.
Informal or sometimes Referred to as Smart Casual is what you would
wear to a fine dining restaurant at home many people usually wear a
collored shirt with a tie and sometimes a Jacket or a dress. I also
would sometimes describe this as Business Attire. Formal is usually a
Tuxedo or Suit and Gowns for women.

Also I find that nowadays many people do not pay attention to these,
depending on the cruiseline. They will NOT throw you off the ship for
not dressing properly but sometimes you may feel uncomfortable being
the few not participating.

Usually, casual means whatever you wore while traveling to/from the cruise.
A golf shirt and slacks for the men.

Informal means a shirt with tie and coat for the men.

Hopefully you can translate this into ladies apparel?
