IMO the smoke on Carnival is worse then the other cruise lines and I have
been on most of the main stream lines other then NCL. You do find smoke on
other cruises, but at least for us the big difference is that the lounges
on Carnival mostly do not have any non-smoking sections. Because smoke is
a health issue for me, this greatly restricks what lounges I can go to to
listen to music and have a drink in the evening. On other cruise lines I
have found the lounges are either non-smoking or have a decent size
non-smoking section.

I'll have to wait until you give us a report about the smoke issue. Princess
seems to have it under control (except in the casino & parts of the
lounges).

I will be on the Carnival Legend(is that the right ship George?) in Oct.
'08 and will see what happens. Casino's are more prone to having spoke
problems, but I can live without making my daily contribution if it is
too smokey. I am also seeing more ships having "no smoking" nights in
the casino.

My favorites are Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Princess. It is hard to
say which is the top one. Princess used to be but has been dropping for
me. One thing going for Princess is that they have more interesting
itineraries.

On my recent Grand Princess cruise, they had one "non-smoking night" in the
casino. In addition, a small section of the casino was designated as
non-smoking every night.

FWIW..... as a former smoker, I didn't think the smoke in the Casino was
very bad at all. There were a few times when playing Black Jack that
someone next to me would light up but there were enough empty seats at the
tables that I could have easily moved if I had wanted to.

I gave Carnival a shot a couple of years ago after sailing on RCI,

Celebrity and Princess. The food was pretty good but the rest was less
than impressive. Service did not impress. Decor was awful. Hated the
low ceilings. Hated the booths in the dining room. The Maitre D made
announcements every night in the dining room. Too much dancing waiters.
The materials used had a cheap feel. The library was upholstered in
dated cheap cloth covering. It is a low budget cruise line. The ship
was very smokey from second hand smoke. The pool areas stunk except for
the slide. The cruise director was obnoxious And this was a Spirit
Class ship that it was recommended I try. The only thing that would get
me on a Carnival ship again in the near future is if the Viking group
booked it.

Charles, as soon as you posted that your first cruise would be on the
Miracle, I knew that you would not be happy. That dining room is far too
garish. As it is, you already have a lot of far out decor...but to eat in
such a dining room is not conducive to digestion...I, too, feel there is too
much maitre d' intervention and we have gotten up before dessert time to
avoid the dancing waiters and gone up to the buffet for our dessert instead.
Every night of this is too much... Maybe if enough people did this they
would get the hint. But I do enjoy Carnival for variety in my cruises and
they treat their platinum members very well.

With all of the good & bad comments still being made I guess the only way

Carnival from the start.

I agree. The only way to really find out is to go and experience it.
That is why I booked cruises on both Carnival and NCL. My experience
was that I did not care for either of them, but they were not bad, just
not as good as the others. While have no plans to book them again, that
does not mean forever. With time things change. Those lines could
improve and the cruise lines I prefer now could go bad.

That's because you are such a wild and funny guy, Rick! vbg
I enjoy the serenity and calm cool decor of Princess, yet it has fun
activities..That is why I don't like sticking with just one line.

Feisty you should not be so touchy about age...it's only a number!

Yes, Ermalee told me I am not an old lady and age means nothing. She
should take her own advice(VBG).
