Default Luggage on French trains

We are going to do some train-traveling in France this spring and my husband
is concerned about luggage storage. He thinks we should go first class
because there's more space for luggage. Is this true? And, post-Madrid, are
you still not allowed to leave your bags at the end of the car?

Hello,
that's not really true. It used to be like that.
The SNCF (the railway company) allows people to leave luggage at the end of
the car provided luggage are equiped with tag. (in second and first class)
You have to write your name on the tag. These tags are free. You can get one
in any station.
Concerning the first class, it is much more confortable than the second one.
If you can afford it, go!!

Marianne,

Having more luggage room is not a good enough reason to go first class
IMO. Second class always has enough room for luggage, except around
Christmas when people are traveling with loads of presents.

For a primer on riding the trains in Europe see my pages at

I'd suggest you carry only enough that can be stored in the overhead
racks. I've had friends who've had things stolen from those end-of-car
spaces.
