Hi !

It kind of depends what yr looking for. We spent a wonderful
week at Meanam beach (quiet) on Koh Samui with an a/c
bungalow 30 steps from the beach + pool for US $23,- /n = Coco
Palm Resort (3 *). Night life in Chaweng beach.
Phuket is a bit more expensive than Samui.
Enjoy Thailand.

USD50 or THB1900 should get you a nice single or double accomodation in
Phuket during the low season - defined from early May to late Oct (depending
on hotel). This low season coincides with the monsoon period in Phuket
(heavy thunderstorm, rough sea, etc). During the peak season, ie from Nov -
Apr, Phuket is very highly in demand and USD50 would only get you an
accomodation in 2-3 star hotels only.

Default Phuket: Kata Center Inn (or "Den Danske Kro")

I reccomend for Kata Beach -- http://www.kata-center-inn.com/

Nice food at the restaurant.
