Ireland's worst air disaster occurred early this morning when a small
two-seater Cessna plane crashed into a cemetery. Irish search and rescue
workers have recovered 1826 bodies so far and expect that number to climb as
digging continues into the night.

That many killed in the crash, or are you being funny, and
just neglected the smiley? ("Cemetery" = innumerable dead
bodies, some of them LONG dead!)

He was doing an "Irish" joke which, unfortunately, was considered funny
in the UK at one time. it's the idea that whatever is Irish is stupid,
comical or silly. Some of them seem benign ('did you hear about the
Irish paper shop that blew away?') but the roots are definitely
racist/nationalist. Nowadays, anyone I know would have been embarrassed
to tell one, or made to feel so if they did. It's up their with black
and gay jokes now- 'tell them if you want to look like a moron.'

Irish jokes is the UK's equivalent of American Polish jokes. This one was a
particularly mindless example.

There used to be an expression, 'That's a bit Irish'.

They got the wrong stereotype. It isn't a "stupid minority" joke,
it's a "skinflint minority" joke. As applied to Aberdonians it
quotes the Aberdeen Press and Journal headline

TAXI CRASH IN UNION STREET
200 FEARED DEAD

That's why many of us use smiley's to indicate a joke is
intended, since we don't all perceive humour in the same
things. "Conversing" via the internet, one quickly realizes
how much of meaning in face-to-face conversation is derived
from facial expression and tone of voice! :-) Being
American, I didn't realize the mere mention of Ireland was
supposed to be funny. (As others have remarked, "ethnic"
jokes - especially on a newsgroup comprised of many
nationalities - seems in singularly poor taste.)

I dunno - there are some wonderful jokes where those who are the usual
recipients can turn the tables.

Richard Pryor (for example) with his jokes about "white folks" had me
in stitches. And as a Brit, I really like Aussie jokes about us
("Poms")......what's the difference between a British Airways jet and
a Quantas jet landing at Alice Springs?

The British Airways jet keeps whining even after they've turned the
motors off.

Actually, yes, it was. The alleged punch line was that Irish S&R
workers are so stupid that they'll dig up a cemetery at an airplane
crash site and count the bodies as victims.

And it was a particularly stupid-ass joke. The OP should be ashamed,
if he's capable of it.
