In fairness, standards of driving are lower in India than in the USA,
and in major cities the risk of injury in a road accident is certainly worth consideration. (Try reading the inside pages of the local newspaper for, say, Hyderabad, and prepare to be appalled.) As for the OP's question, since this is a school trip the school is presumably accepting some responsibility for safety issues. She should encourage her mother to discuss such concerns with the people organising the trip, and promise that she will do what her teachers have told her to do. |

Thanks for the advice, but I wasn't actually asking to be told to brush up on my culture and the culture of India. There are random acts of violence in India, and I do realize I have a better chance of getting food sick, but my question is what to tell my mother to comfort her without completely dismissing her fears. I repeat, why can't you tell your mom the facts if you know them so well (I don't think you do)? You seem to be saying the facts don't matter. If so, go to a psychology or parenting forum - this never belonged in rec.travel.air to begin with, and you punish charitable attempts to help anyway. |

However, the bombings seem to happen in more industrialized countries, not India. In India, I would be more worried about drinking the water and/or finding a good place to bathe actually than either cars or bombs. Have you tried the river Ganges? @:Oo |

Maybe I got too snippy about PJ's concerns. While in a waiting room at
Narita, I saw the Sikh bomb explosion that killed handlers of baggage routed from Vancouver to India. While that was ages ago, Canada recently acquitted the suspects in what may be a lack of backbone. A reason to avoid YVR or Canadian gateways if you think this shows a lack of seriousness for concerns as PJ mentions. http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/natio...nce050316.html |
