Jean,
I think it will be very difficult to enforce. Basically it will be up

to
the cabin steward to detect if anyone has been smoking, or neighbors who
might complain if they smell smoke on the next balcony. Other then

that,
short of making the entire ship non-smoking it is difficult at best

enforce
smoking rules.

Ernie,
Perhaps alarms that would go off notifying the proper authorities if

someone
lights a cigarette or cigar in their cabin would be a wiser way to do

it..I
do not think it would be fair of Oceania to expect its passengers to

inform
on each other...not my idea of a pleasant and relaxing cruise and
vacation...

Make it a $100 cabin credit on anyone you turn in (who was actually smoking,
not just for a fake claim) and people will do it.

That would be a very enticing incentive! I bet it would work.

That would make it feel as if we were living in a communist state...Yuck!
Think it best for the cruise line to find a way of enforcing its wishes
instead of turning people into informers..

news:20040802000443.12159.00002765@mb-incentive! I What has communism to
do with it? I'm not keen on paid informers on cruise ships, but a
communist idea? Hardly!

What I meant by communist state or tactics; In communist countries such as
China and once Russia, people informed on each other out of fear..

While on a ship, it would not be done out of fear, but there is the
unpleasantness of reporting others and acting as an informant,...I do not
find that as a very pleasant thing to be doing, especially while enjoying a
cruise..
I am not a smoker and cannot tolerate smoking due to allergies and sinus
trouble...but I think if a cruiseline says that there is to be no smoking in
the cabins, it is THEIR job to see that appropriate measures are set up to
prevent it from happening..

The cruise line did not arrive at this policy without considering the

wishes of
its clients. So in enforcing "its wishes" (as you put it), the cruise

line is
enforcing the wishes of its clients.

Ref, as I said above, the cruise line should enforce its own rules and not
expect the passengers who have taken it for those very reasons, to do
it...If they are willing to put out the money to do it properly, there
should be no problem...Carnival Paradise was able to do it..
