Default Baggage security at Johannesburg Airport

SA Airways has announced that they will be offering a free baggage
wrap service at Johannesburg Airport starting from 1 July.

The service will start in the domestic terminal, and will be
introduced to the international terminal in a month or two.

1) In spite of the SAA spin doctors insistence that baggage tampering
is within international standards, this is a tacit acknowledgement
that SAA have been unable to implement decent securty measures to
ensure the safety of passenger's baggage, and

2) I expect the incidence of theft from baggage will dramatically rise
in the international terminal until the service is offered, as baggage
handlers will know that security levels will be lower, and because
they wll try and steal as much as possible before the door of
opportunity is closed.

Baggage tampering is a HUGE problem at JIA, so be warned. At least 50%
of my friends, colleagues and associates have had bags opened and
items removed. I've had nothing stolen (YET!) but I have recently had
three bags sliced open and my clothes "gone through" while the
handlers look for cellphones, electronic devices and cameras.
