... a single 40 year old man and need some pointers on nightlife. In order to get into the mega-clubs around West 27th on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, you will need to be in a group with at least as many women as men. If you are in a group of men, you will probably need to get a table and agree to buy two "bottles", which cost at least $250-300 each, in order to get past the doorman. As a single 40- year old man, forget getting in - if you really want to go, then try to join with a group who are going. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are easier, but you still might have trouble as a single man. The bar scene is much more varied and interesting than the club scene in NYC in my opinion, and you don't have the asinine door and bottle policies. Almost all bars will let anyone who wants come in. For upscale cocktail bars, try Midtown's hotel bars. For the "scene", try the Lower East Side and SoHo. In hotel bars, the Lower East Side, or SoHo, expect very high drink prices - $10-15 for a cocktail. For more casual places, try the East Village, or Alphabet City. There are some very good wine bars throughout the city, including French restaurants which become wine bars late at night. There are also a lot of bars with live jazz (especially in Harlem) and live rock (especially in Williamsburg). The wilder, lager lout-type bars are on the Upper East Side around 1st and 2nd avenue, or in parts of the West Village (which also has many gay bars). For really laid back, inexpensive bars, try Williamsburg in Brooklyn. If you can say some more about your specific tastes and budget, I can give you some particular places to recommend. |

Excellent stuff. Like live music. Don't mind laid back. Smart but casual. Inexpensive sounds attractive ;-) I am staying in Times Square - yeah I know blew most of the budget on the hotel LOL Many thanks in advance Tricky UK |

Inexpensive sounds attractive ;-) I am staying in Times Square - yeah I know blew most of the budget on the hotel LOL A few of my favorite bars in the general midtown area (any of them are a short cab ride or a 15-30 minute walk from Times Square) are K Lounge (Indian statues, Bollywood movies, and Indian-themed cocktails), La Bateau Ivre (French restaurant/wine bar), Divine Bar (wine bar), Casa North (Egyptian restaurant/bar with tents inside the restaurant, Middle Eastern-themed cocktails, and you can smoke a hookah pipe), and Sakagura (Japanese restaurant/sake bar). K Lounge and Casa North are expensive; the others are moderate. At the ones which are restaurants also, it's no problem getting drinks at the bar, or getting a table just for drinks if you are there late. Some good low-key places downtown are Decibel (sake bar), Shebeen (they invent their own cocktails), Otto's Shrunken Head (tiki bar), Mehanata (a Bulgarian bar/club), and Circa Tabac (a cigar/cocktail bar). I don't really know the live music scene well, but I did enjoy the Lenox Lounge jazz club in Harlem. |

Before "How High The Moon" hit the charts in '51, he and Mary Ford had a fifteen-minute afternoon program broadcast from their home .. . . well, the basement, by the Columbia Broadcasting System. He described the equipment he had and how he was using it so when "How High The Moon" hit the charts, I knew exactly how it was done. His explanations, although technical, were clear. I should thank him. http://iridiumjazzclub.com/ Nearby on 44th, there's a Big Band at Birdland Nearby at Swing 46 (on 46th) is the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra where dancers go and the food's excellent And, of course, the Village Vanguard. At least the above was true when last I was there. Probably still is. -- __________________________________________________ ______________ A dancing San Franciscan who sometimes just listens. http://geocities.com/dancefest/ --- http://geocities.com/iconoc/ ICQ: http://wwp.mirabilis.com/19098103 ------- IClast at Gmail com -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |
