Layover in Amsterdam
We have a 6 hour layover in Amsterdam on our way home from a Med cruise.
How long will it take us to get in to the city center from the airport? Is there a frequent bus or train connection.? We have been to Amsterdam several times, usually by car. We do not need to see a lot of the usual tourist sites. Would like to go in and have lunch and browse the shops. Thanks, Fred M. |

Thanks, Fred M. --------------- You can purchase a day return ticket (Dagretour) for the train. Last year it cost 5,5o euro. And make sure to validate the ticket in the punch machines by the platforms. Kristian |

Sjoerd --------------- OK- nice to know ! The txt on the backside of the ticket said something about "afstempelen" and "stempelautomaat" , so I reasoned better safe than sorry. Kristian |

Layover in Amsterdam
We have a 6 hour layover in Amsterdam on our way home from a Med cruise. How long will it take us to get in to the city center from the airport? Is there a frequent bus or train connection.? I assume your baggage is checked through. From a Med cruise heading to the U.S., you will probably arrive in either areas B, C, or D. Chances are your overseas flight will depart from E or F. If you follow the signs to E & F you will ultimately come upon passport control for people leaving Europe. Just before that passport control there are lockers where you can store any carry-on that you might not want to schlep around Amsterdam. From there it is only a few steps to the stairs down to baggage claim. You stroll through baggage claim and customs and out to the outer terminal area, and on to the train station section of the terminal, where you can buy the Dagretour ticket that Sjoerd has mentioned to Amsterdam Centraal, and go down one level to the train, which runs about 20 minutes to Amsterdam Centraal. Typically, this whole routine takes about 45 minutes till you are downtown, in my experience. But allow plenty more time on the return, because although the lines are not that long for security, there is also another line to have your passport looked at (if you check your luggage as described, be sure to return to the B, C & D area, to get your bags before heading into E & F--if you don't then you'll have to go through the passport control twice), and most transatlantic flights start boarding one full hour before departure--and the lines can be the LONGEST just queing up to be asked those goofy security questions at the departure gate, and then have your stuff x-rayed again. |
