cross the Caspian Sea? Will it be better to go via Aktau
or via Turkmenbashi? Has anybody fresh information about
how to continue?

Train station of Aktau seems to be Mangyshlak.

Aktau is kind of far south from the normal routes. (We use it for
freight.) If you're going through Kazakhstan but don't need to drop
that far south, go via Atyrau.

He's coming from _Azerbaijan_, see above, so even more south.

True, but getting to Atyrau is still easier. It would depend on the
route he's going after that, I guess. And Atyrau would mean not
crossing the Caspian. It's not exactly scenic. ;-)

Not crossing the Caspian would mean one more transit visa for
Westerners.
