When you get down to that short a time, it's a big difference talking days
vs. nights. Most cruises are better termed in "nights" A 3 night sailing
actually has 2 full days either at sea or in a port. This excludes the
embarkation and debarkation days which are partial days. So a 1 night
cruise would actually have no full days. Sail at night and come back in the
morning. A 1 day cruise would actually be 2 nights. While those are not
frequent, there are a LOT of 2 day/3 night sailings out of Florida. RCI and
Carnival both offer a lot of them. An example is Majesty of the Seas. But
all that I'm aware of are on ships at least 3-4-5 generations old, and are
nothing like the new splashy ships doing 7 night sailings. Still they are a
good way to "test the waters", which is what we did back in the mid 90's
when we did a 2 day/3 night sailing on the Nordic Empress. The Celebrity
ship Century is probably the nicest ship offering some regularly scheduled
shorter sailing. Even ships like the Queen Mary 2 offer a 4 night sailing
on occasion.

The Norwegian Star has a one-nighter out of Seattle in September.

You'll see a smattering of "cruises to nowhere" that are one-nighters
which at a minimum are on actual cruise ships with the same staff and
amenities as longer trips and there are ferries and low-rent casino
boats which offer an at-sea experience. Beyond that, there are many 3
& 4 night cruises (although usually on older, less spectacular ships)
which ARE cruises.

However, if evaluating whether a cruise is right for a person - in my
experience, the average cruiser (especially first-timers) really
doesn't get into the rhythm of the experience until day 3 -- so for
best results, a 4 day cruise would be best. Personally, although
longer is always better -- a 4 or 5 day cruise still feels like a
"real" cruise experience to me (I recently booked a 4 day cruise,
which will be my 21st - ranging from 3 to 11 days.)

My, you're not only "chatty" but also very curious, Cathy!

I might try a one-nighter myself, but I agree that a it's way too short
for a
first timer to evaluate the cruise experience. Embarkation, disembarkation
and the muster drill are three of the least favorite events on a cruise.
You would get to do all three in a pretty short time.

On the flip side of a one night trip, everyone carries only one
suitcase on board and there is no port-of-call paper work to process,
so both embarkation and disembarkation go much faster! We did a one
night on the Norwegian Spirit out of NYC last September, and are doing
it again just next Saturday--for me, it makes the first few days of
school (with all of the long, boring faculty meetings) pass far more
pleasently!! There was virtually no line for embarkation at all last
year (as there will be this year), and NCL allows disembarkation at
any time that you like after breakfast, as long as it is before 12
noon. All of the ship's services and offices are open, and it does (at
least for the cruise novice) give one a sense of what a longer voyage
would be like. As we did last year, we are taking 10 cruise novices
with us (all colleagues from my school) and are looking forward to
being on board for just one more care-free evening!! It will also be
our last chance to sail on the Spirit just one more time out of
NYC--next summer (2009), she sails out of Boston. We will see her in
Bermuda (we will be sailing on the Norwegian Dawn at that point), but
just one more night on board now just seems fabulous!!

Thanks Peg! It's sounding even better.
I'm upgrading my expectations from
"might try a one-nighter " to a
"got to do it" someday.

It's a great benefit for the cruise novices
to be traveling with an experienced
cruiser to help and offer perspective.
in case of any hurdles.
