Default Suggestions for Alaska!

I will be heading to Alaska with HAL Volendam in Mid August with port of
calls in Skagway, Ketchikan, and Juneau.

I will be traveling with my wife (we are in our early-mid 30's) and 4 other
older folks (60-70yrs). I was wondering about possible shore
outings/excursions you might recommend at each port of call that is worth
going to, and who should I book through? We are not looking to spend too
extravagant amounts of money on excursions, but if it is worthwhile, we will
consider it.

THanks

The Roberts Tramway in Juneau looks interesting. We are heading there next
month. $24 for all day pass. In Ketchikan, we reserved the Lumberjack show.
$29.

Al, we were on the Volendam last September and had a fantastic time, you'll
love it. Definitely consider the White Pass Railroad in Skagway, (we felt it
was worth it) not so sure about the Mt Roberts Tramway though - we only got
to use the pass once because our time in Juneau was cut short - if not for
anything else you get a great aerial picture of your ship as your going
either up or down.
If you're not into the expensive shore excursions (and most of them are)
each place you stop at is well worth just looking at, so just walk around.
Go to the Red Dog Saloon in Juneau - maybe catch the city bus out to
Mendenhall Glacier - beautiful! Creek Street in Ketchikan, plenty to do
without shelling out big $$$. When we did White Pass, we just bought our
tickets at the station - but then we were travelling at the end of the
season and we were the only ship in port - you may not be so lucky. You can
book any tours online throught the HAL website.

Make sure you get up to the 'Crow's Nest' about sunset on your day 'at sea'
And hopefully (if the seals have finished with their breeding season) when
you are in Glacier Bay, the ship will be able to get into John Hopkins
Glacier - that was awesome! if you are even luckier, the sun will be shining
)

Just a hint too - do yourself a favour and do your Immigration Questionnaire
thing online through the HAL website. You can do that as soon as you have
your booking number, that will save time as your waiting to board the ship.

Have a great time,
Debbie
