Militants plan to attack Thai tourist resorts: report
Last Updated Thu, 23 Dec 2004 11:50:43 EST

BANGKOK - Documents found in the house of a fugitive leader of
Thailand's Islamic insurgency suggested extremists were plotting
attacks next year at tourist resorts across the country, a senior Thai
security official said.

The separatist rebels also planned to turn three Muslim-dominated
provinces in Thailand's south into a base for international terrorist
groups, the official told the Associated Press Thursday.

Gen. Kitti Rattanachaya, a senior security adviser to Prime Minister
Thaksin Shinawatra said the documents show that in 2005, the militants
plan to attack "soft targets" such as the tropical beach resorts of
Pattaya and Phuket. These destinations draw tourists from around the
world.

There have been repeated warnings of plans by militants to target
tourists in Asia since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the Unites States.

Islamic extremists with suspected links to al-Qaeda bombed a
discotheque in a Bali resort in October 2002, killing almost 200
people. The victims were mostly Western tourists including two
Canadians.

The attack also caused havoc with Indonesia's tourism industry.

* FROM NOV. 8, 200e: Increased security may not be enough to save
tourism in Thailand

Kitti said the seized documents indicated the separatists want to
intensify their fight against the Buddhist central government next
year.

The plans indicated the insurgents want to broaden a conflict in the
south that has killed almost 600 people this year, fuelling concerns
their cause was gaining support among Islamic extremists outside the
country.

"The situation will be terrifying as the terrorists open war on all
fronts to divert attention from the southern area," Kitti, a former
army commander in the south, told the AP.

Thai officials have said previously that the separatists have
threatened to attack tourists sites, but have not said where the
information came from.

The documents were seized earlier this year from the house of Masae
Useng, a former Islamic school teacher who the government accuses of
masterminding a separatist plan for Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat
provinces, which border Malaysia.

thank you very much for posting all these news on LOS in this group

only later generations of readers will thank you for the good works you
have done

in the meantime, yours is a thankless task, not much appreciated except by
a few.

i suspect, most farangs in this group are not interested in political news
of LOS because if the worst were to happen, they simply bail out with their
local families back to farangland ;-))

in a way the farang in this group, like all soc.cul... groups, have
inherited the sanuk, hua chiau and mai phien rai syndromes. Whatever happens
to this LOS is not of great concern for they have a safety valve which the
locals do not have-- they just leave LOS to let the locals "to fry their
own sotongs" so to speak. So why don't they leave now before it is too
late? Nope, they are enjoying the best of both worlds-- living on pittances
of their retirement salaries from their farangland and treated like kings
here in LOS. These are the hua chiau of LOS

notice how the many farangs of this group regale in pointing out/belittling
the "idiosyncracies/injustices/double pricings/requiring the farangs to do
visa runs even though they have 'contributed' to the local economy" of the
locals and these have been their forte. Learning of and research into the
local languages/dialects/history are incidental for them to get along
with/and impress some of the locals. The local knowledgeable recourse to
better academic studies of these in such venues like the *.edu.

is there any reason why local thai do not come to this group to discuss? it
the charter requirement that discussion in this group shall be in english,
a deterrent? i think not. i posit they are sick of the
innuendoes/belittling by the "knowledgeable farangs" that they distance
themselves to respectable reasonable groups. Prof Supat is one of them.
Some thais who have done their graduate studies on returning home, thought
that they have found some comradeship here are disillused and left
instantly-- the Lana girl is another example. i think this is what the
selfish farangs in this group want -- to themselves to the exclusion of the
local thais so that they can regale "safely sebagai katak di bawah
temperong"

Of course, there are exception to the above observation. People like
ajarn(s), daniel, fnurk, larbgai,vagabond, chabby,carlos, mort,
roscoe, torben, lumier,jb, and many others, who have inculturated
themselves into the locals, bleed for LOS. These are the true scters.

Having said all these, may i wish you, "six-toes" and all those true
scters, celebrating xmas tonight a holy xmas which is another 6 hours away
in LOS.

Poor little racist twit. Why don't you go back to chinaman land, where you
belong. Or will they behead you upon learning that you are the spawn of an
opium den, 5 minute liason.

Just what do you contribute to thailand? Buying medication for your mental
affliction doesn't count.
