Based on a trip ealrier this month, Dragonair has some cheap offers ...
as low as under HKD2000 round trip HKG-PEK

I thoroughly recommend the Harmony Hotel in Beijing, near the railway
station, about USD35-40 a night.

Flew China Eastern to Shanghai (about CNY880) and took the overnight
train back (about CNY500).

In Shanghai, I stayed at the Bailemen Hotel on Nanjing Rd West (about
USD50 a night), which I wouldn't recommend to a brown dog apart from
its location above a Metro station (Jing'an Temple).

Easy. Book flight and hotel with a HK travel agency. They can get you
a visa too. The flight can be cheaper if you fly from Shenzhen
airport.

Just as a matter of interest, how much does the visa cost thru local travel
agent? and how much time does it take to get it?

The cost varies greatly with where you get it, the type of visa, and
how fast you want it, and probably your passport nationality.

For example, a same-day (normal working day)single-entry tourist visa
from a travel agent recently cost HKD300. To get it on a local holiday
would have doubled the cost. Make sure you have appropriate photos.
Six- month and 1-year multiple-entry visas are much more expensive.

I paid HKD600 about a month ago for a single-entry tourist visa.
However, I have a UK passport and I needed the visa *that* day. I just
gave my passport to a travel agent. No forms, no signature required.

Following up to myself, it appears I didn't pay above the odds after
all (and didn't need to stand in line). HKD600 is a standard charge for
UK passport holders for same-day service.

Aha.... When I went there with my boyfriend (he's a dutch passport holder
and I'm a local resident here), their service was fine. My boyfriend
experienced to apply for the visa by himself and he said it was fine.
It's terrible that they are impolite to tourists!

Usually I went to Wanchai branch. It seems like there was shorter or no
queue there.

CTS is a pain: the offices are usually crowded and the staff are rude
and dim. I'm quite happy to pay above the odds and use a travel agent
though I understand there are those who don't.
