Travelocity/Princess Single Penalty

That is a very good reason NOT to cruise then! That's precisely why I'll never book a holiday or peak family vacation sailing again. I've found my niche: repositionings in the off season. Ships aren't filled to "all berths" capacity, only a handful of kids are aboard, and absolutely no problem finding deck chairs. Warren |

FIRST OFF WHY SHOULD A SINGLE HAVE TO PAY MORE JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE
ONLY ONE IN A CABIN...This is the problem I have when I travel and I think it sucks.. plus its not fare that just because someone travels alone they should have to pay a person and a half... Odysseus wrote: I mentioned the Celebrity single penalty. Here is one that Travelocity and Princess have collaborated on. They are offering a $200 shipboard credit on select sailings. Here are some details. "...Single occupancy staterooms will only receive half of the applicable Onboard Credit amount and only one per stateroom may be applied..." "...Based on double occupancy or better. Single guests must pay 200% of the cruise fare to be eligible for this Offer..." I have to pay twice the fare but get only half the shipboard credit. It appears to me that the cruise lines really don't want singles on their ships. |

I travel solo and think a person and a half is generous. A fair
rate would be slightly less than what two people pay. The cruise line has to recoup the same fixed cost for the cruise regardless of the number of people in the cabin. The cruise lines have computer yield management programs that will tell them exactly how people spend their money including who, when, where and how much. If selling to single passengers was more profitable "overall" then selling doubles, all cruise lines would be marketing to singles instead of actively discouraging them from booking. They may not have done the math comparing what singles spend compared to what doubles spend. They may not have broken it down by other factors. It's possible that a single booking cattegory X, on average, spends more then doubles in cattegory Y. |
