Can anyone tell me why Continental is the only US airline to fly to
Tel Aviv? Is there any history to this flight?

Probably just the simple matter of their not being enough of a market
for the route OR the airport at Tel Aviv not being able to handle more
than one United States airline.

Also probably has to do with the fact that El Al services Toronto
(Canada), New York, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles.

Probably for the same reason many US airlines don't fly to other smaller
European and Mid-Eastern destinations: it makes more sense to fly from many
cities in the USA to a European hub, and leave the European hub to "smaller
European / Mid-Eastern destination" flight to the European partner airline.

There are other reasons: Not all airports have runways for long range
operation.
Smaller places even with long runways might not feed enough first class
and business passengers; that's why Lony (France) - US hase been
discontinued, although general loads weren't that bad.

Lyon/Lyons. Bad typo, sorry.
