customs in amsterdam, or marseille, or both?
Hi,
I am flying to Marseille via Amsterdam. Where will I clear the customs? I understand both countries are in the Schengen zone, so I am guessing I will clear customs once in Amsterdam? On the other hand, if I don't need to clear customs in Amsterdam, I assume I still have the option to do it voluntarily so that I can walk out of the airport? Thank you. |

I assume you're flying from outside Schengen. Usually your luggage goes to your final destination, and the result it that it often isn't checked at all. I know it makes no sense, but that's my experience. On the other hand, if I don't need to clear customs in Amsterdam, I assume I still have the option to do it voluntarily so that I can walk out of the airport? You can walk out of the airport and come back, but in the usual case you won't have your luggage with you. -- Yves Bellefeuille |

I have only been a few times to Amsterdam, but I don't recall much of interest near the airport (I think a lot of offices and industrial type area), but to really see Amsterdam you will need to take the train dowbtown (I think it was about a 45 ride), or other transporation....but I think the train was the least expensive way. |

We arrived there @11AM and had a layover of @ 3 1/2 hours. Near the exit, there was a tour desk where we signed up for a 2-hour tour in a small comfortable van that took us to a wooden shoe shop, windmill and a ride thru Amsterdam, including the Frank house and red-light district. They got us back to airport in plenty of time for our next flight. On our way to the gate, the security screener suggested that he would have to seize our bag of Belgian chocolates. I was not amused. :-) =R= |

The trains are very frequent and take 20 mins to Amsterdam Centraal. Please don't get in front of me in the line at the ticket machines, which are not very foreigner-friendly :-) B; |

You are a foreigner in a foreign land too, Erik. For those passing through Schiphol, who want some excitement, there is a shuttle bus running to the Keukenhof. The Keukenhof is as beautifully boring as ever, the excitement is when the return trip shuttle bus gets caught in a traffic jam as appeared to be happening yesterday. Will you or won't you miss your connecting flight? Will the EUR 4,20 broodje Unox worst poison you? Isn't it time a McDs was opened in the Keukenhof? or a least a normal Dutch chip shop? You won't find a McD like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeremyrh/463794539/ B; |

In theory you clear customs when you get reunited with your luggage at the end of your trip, but pass through immigration at your point of entry to the Schengen countries. In practice you will see an immigration official but the chances of actually seeing a customs officer doing more than standing still and awaiting someone to declare something are vanishingly small on most European internal flights. -- William Black I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach Time for tea. |
