That's true for the crowds, but the Old China Hand is not the Old
China hand of legend ... it's a poor reconstruction and
over-frequented by under-employed ladies from the Philippines.

The original Old China Hand was one of the oldest and friendliest pubs
around during the time I lived in Hong Kong. It had a loyal following
of regular customers that had been meeting there for years, but a
stranger was always welcomed and could find someone to chat to. The
food used to be great too. The huge English style fried breakfast, or
'Tess's secret recipe' chicken couldn't be beaten anywhere.

Unfortunately, the owner died while back in New Zealand, and his
Filipina wife who ran it decided she didn't want to carry on the
business. It was sold a few years ago and converted into yet another
very ordinary bar. The original customers all moved elsewhere when the
old place closed.
