I was a very poor student but did well on tests so could have gone to
college.

About three years after I returned from Europe, I had the good
fortune to become an apprentice in a trade for which I not only had a
talent but that I also enjoyed doing. Were it not for that good luck,
and my strong and honest union, I can't imagine how my economic life
might have been.

Thanks to that apprenticeship and union, I'm far from poor and
receive a pension payment just about equal to my Social Security.
I've been extremely fortunate and can complain about nothing.

It also helps, however, to have been born at the correct time. I was.
