Default A service to hook up singles for cruises?

I want to buy my [straight] son a cruise, but none of his male friends
are interested and he doesn't want to be encumbered with a girl. Is
there some forum or website that solves that problem?

Here's one website for single cruisers. But it looks at first glance to be
more for those looking for love. http://singlescruise.com/

If he just wants to cruise and meet some new friends, and you nor he have
decided on a specific cruise/line/itinerary etc. I suggest
http://boards.cruisecritic.com They have a roll call section for each
cruiseline and ship.

I'd say the best thing to do would be pick a general area of interest
(itinerary) then choose the cruiseline that sounds best to you (My personal
preference is Princess). Then choose the ship and date. Check the cruise
critic roll call for that specific cruise and see how active it is. If it
isn't active and he wants to get to know more people precruise, choose
another date.

I don't know what time frame you're looking at, but there are quite a few
group cruises already organized through the website. Prices are generally
low. Depending on his age and interests, the Pre-Halloween cruise on the
Carnival Conquest (October 15th) might be good. At last check, the roll call
for that cruise had almost 40,000 posts
(http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=103797 Note that the
original information in this thread lists the ship leaving from New Orleans.
It has since changed to leaving from Galveston) . The theme for the main
group is "Saints & Sinners" and then the group that I cruise with has chosen
that cruise as well. Our group is called "Cabin Crawlers". From the sounds
of the CC group, there are quite a bit of party people onboard (and I know
from experience that my group is into partying and having a great time, but
we also like having formal dinners together and just hanging out on the
beach together)

To find a list of organized group cruises go down towards the bottom of the
cruise critic page and there's an entire section with each upcoming group
cruise and date.

I hope you can find the perfect vacation for your son. It's a very nice
gesture for you to offer to buy him one.

BTW, I think it's hilarious that you pointed out that your son was straight.
Had you not, though, you would have had a few responses with pied piper,
atlantis, RSVP and other gay cruise groups and charters.

Thanks, Les.

He's a great guy, out of the Marines and working hard - he needs a
break. I'd like to avoid the single occupancy surcharge, and he'd like
to find a cabin-mate who'll respect the Do Not Disturb sign...

There must be a more people who don't want the obligation of a date but
can't find a cabin-mate with compatible vacation time. I would have
thought that would be organized by now.

I'm always looking for a good cruise bargain. I know that the October cruise
I mentioned is under $800 for a single inside cabin. I think that's a great
rate for a single on a 7 day cruise. Carnival seems to have the best single
rates, but I've found good rates on Princess as well.

What I'm doing is booking the single cabin that sleeps 5. Then if anyone
needs/wants a cabinmate, I'll add them to the cabin. (I'm a fag, so I doubt
your son would want to share with me, but the idea itself is a good one) I
have a couple friends interested in the cruise but they're undecided, so
this way they have an inexpensive option to cruise with us (If I add someone
to my cabin the rate drops to about $450pp). I'm just procrastinating on
booking it. I want to get the 2 April cruises out of the way first. Plus I'm
still debating on popping for a balcony cabin instead of the inside. Guess
I'm a bit wishy washy lol. I'm holding the 5 person inside for now until I
decide for sure.

I became a travel agent just for the ability to search better rates and get
a little advanced information on cruises and ships. I've only booked 1
cruise through myself (Grand Princess this past December) I'm too cheap to
pay high rates. The best rates I usually find for singles and general
cruising are at smartcruiser.com and cruisecompete.com Smartcruiser is best
for quick quotes and to get a general idea on rates. Cruise compete gives
you several agents to choose from and their rates plus any extras they throw
in.

You can check the Cruise Critic boards. There may be people looking for
cabinmates on specific sailings.

I do want to add that respecting the Do Not Disturb sign may be a hard one
to come by. Keep in mind that whomever he shares a cabin with is also on
vacation and the whole dorm room "sock on the door" thing is not something
I'd every respect on a cruise. Heck, it's my vacation too and I want to be
able to enjoy it as best as possible!

Good luck!

LES!

Ike,

This is an ongoing problem... singles don't have a lot of choices. They can
ask around among friends and acquaintances (you never know who might turn
up, a co-worker I hadn't thought to ask joined me on a cruise), they can
advertise on one of the cruise related travel sites (I found a lady on
CruiseMates who went on two cruises with me), they can book with a group
that does sets up shares (there's several of them out there) or they can
take a singles' cruise on Windjammer Barefoot Cruises and they will set up a
share.

I've done all of those things, generally successfully, but things change and
I'm not a young manG.

Regarding that "do not disturb" thing... don't forget... it goes both ways.
He COULD find himself locked out of his own cabin for long periods of time.

Les, what single cabin sleeps 5? I've never seen one.

It's not a specific single cabin. It's one of the Carnival inside
upper/lower cabins that sleeps 5. I'm still heeming and hawing on whether I
want an inside, OV or balcony. It's the only of my 4 cruises this year that
I haven't booked yet. I'm waiting until after my April cruises so I can give
friends and family time to decide if they want to go and if so, we can
decide together what kind of cabin we want for sure.

I really don't want an inside. Of my previous 4, I've only had 1 inside. The
3 I've already booked for this year are at least OV's or above.

ACK!

Let me try to save what little bit of sense I have here.

I know the upper/lower only sleeps 2. I have no idea what I was thinking.
Anyway, there are a few cabins that sleep 5, but right now I have no idea
what categories they are lol

Whew! I thought Carnival was hiding something for a bit there... ;-)
