Asheville, NC
I'm going to be spending 5 or 6 days in Asheville, NC in a few weeks.
There seem to be quite a few hotels in and around Asheville, and wondered if anyone has any hotel suggestions. I'm looking for a modern hotel with these minimum requirements: Some form of internet access: preferably free wireless. pool: indoor or outdoor close proximity to shops and restaurants, attractions I'm not super price sensitive, and it seems most hotels can be had for under $200/night. Any hotels that jump out as spectacular places to say? I'm contemplating staying at the Biltmore Estate itself, but the fact that reserving a couple rooms for a week stay doesn't qualify for free access to the Estate is retarded. Besides the rooms don't look particularly nice or updated. Any off the beaten path suggestions for attractions? We'd be a relatively small family group of about 4 adults + 1 infant. Museums, nice photo opportunities, shops that don't sell $1 kitchen magnets, upscale restaurants, interesting local history, hands-on exhibits, etc sound nice. Mountain hikes, kayaking, outdoor sports don't. Thanks for any advice. Keith |

You'll find plenty to do in the area, especially if you're into arts/crafts. One good place is the Black Mountain Center for the Arts (in Black Mountain). There's also the homes of Carl Sandburg and Thomas Wolfe. Cherokee (and Gatlinburg) are both incredibly tacky, but Cherokee has a good museum and if you're in season, the passion play Onto These Hills. Have fun. |

Keith, you might want to check out the city's official tourism site for advice on hotels and sightseeing at exploreasheville.com. Also, a good site for consumer reviews of hotels is tripadvisor.com. You could also check out a good old-fashioned printed guidebook for North Carolina (or that general region) at your library or bookstore. James |
