Default Alexandria, VA: local gifts?

Hi all: I'll be visiting Alexandria, VA soon, staying near Old Town.
Are there specialty stores easily reached within walking distance? I
won't be renting a car, and would like to buy local gifts (handicrafts
or specialty candies or chocolates) to bring home to friends and
family. Any suggestions?

The Torpedo Factory is an artists center where you could buy fine art
and crafts. Be sure to take a walking tour of Alexandria, which has
more original buildings than Williamsburg (which has a lot of
reconstructions). And I particularly liked Taverna Crekitou (sp?)
which serves wonderful Greek food (though it has been many years since
I've been there and the restaurant might not still be in business).

Taverna Cretekou, 818 King St., and they are still there. They have an
especially nice outdoor patio dining area. Another terrific restaurant
is the Majestic Cafe, very near Cretekou at 911King Street.

Tne Torpedo Factory is a good bet for unique local souvenirs. Another
idea is to attend the Saturday morning (6-10am) farmer's market in
City Hall Square -- this also includes several local craftsmen nd
artists. One fellow who's often there makes hand-painted coffee cups
of Old Town scenes and doors. Very nice (He has a shop across King
Street behind the pen and stationery store, as well.)

There are sevarl other shops along lower King Steert and on Union
Street with the sort of souvenirs you're seeking.

Regards,
Larry

Old Town is one big specialty store. You'll be sick of them 15 minutes into
it.
