WHERE CAN I BUY AN UMBRELLA IN LONDON ?
Not bad I'd try that one if I found it in London

But don't take one to Scotland with you, the strong winds destroy them fairly quickly. I have seen some advertised in travel catalogs in the U.S. which are supposed to be "wind-proof" - see: http://www.magellans.com/shopping/se...=18&Search.y=5 (you may have to cut and paste to get to the page). It's put out by London Fog, and is called the "Windefyer". Does anyone know whether it works or not? (It's rather pricey, but if you encounter rain with wind frequently, it might be worth it.) |

The one I bought in the USA at Sharper Image has lasted me a longg time Thanks There's an very old umbrella maker's shop called, I think, James White, at the junction of Gower Street and New Oxford Street. It's a shop I've always wanted to visit but never have, so maybe you can go there and post a trip report? The one we were in last year was at the corner of Bloomsbury St. and New Oxford Street. It was wonderful, equalled only by one we've visited in Vienna. -- Larry |

In London it is traditional to buy umbrellas in Swaine, Adeney, Brigg &
Sons in Piccadilly. They will measure you and fit you for one, and give you a short talk on its care and use. I used to have one, it was made of one piece of ash, turned and polished for the shaft, bent and with the bark on for the handle. It had sterling silver fittings including a pencil 'for when one is racing'. |
