Driving from Munich to Insbruck
Hi
I am going to drive from Munich to Innsbruck on December 16 and returinig on December 23. My questions for you a -what is the most recommended route on December 16, I would like to enjoy the scenery. No rush -what is the best choice for the way back ? I am considering the fact that the returnig date is close to the Christmas and the roads may be busy at that time. I need to reach the Munich Airport by lunch time to take off. Thank you NP |

Driving from Munich to Insbruck
I am going to drive from Munich to Innsbruck on December 16 and
returinig on December 23. My questions for you a -what is the most recommended route on December 16, I would like to enjoy the scenery. Second attempt: take the Achenpass. It can be reached from Munich via Bad Tölz or Tegernsee. You reach the Inn valley near Schwaz, from there it is some 30km to Innsbruck. If you use the motorway in Austria, you need a "pickerl" - a vignette. Snow tyres are highly recommended, take chains with you if you want to be on the safe side. If the weather is too bad, take the motorway via Kufstein. |

Driving from Munich to Insbruck
-what is the most recommended route on December 16, I would like to
enjoy the scenery. No rush Two options: The left one via Salzburg Autobahn (only a short way) then follow Tegernsee signs, pass this lake and Achensee lake, down into Inn valley, turn right to Innsbruck. Avoid the austrian Autobahn, the road is well and you need no toll sticker. The right one via Mittenwald. I would take Garmisch Autobahn, leave it at exit Sindelsdorf and change left to main road B11 via Benediktbeuern (ancient Monastery, worth a view), lakes Kochelsee and Walchensee into the mountains. At the end down the very steep Zirler Berg into Inn valley and a short way left to Innsbruck. Watch out carefully to avoid entering the Autobahn. The road suddenly is the Autobahn, with a small exit way to the right. It's a trap, patrols are waiting there for tourists! Penalty toll costs a fortune. -what is the best choice for the way back ? I am considering the fact that the returnig date is close to the Christmas and the roads may be busy at that time. I need to reach the Munich Airport by lunch time to take off. Then I would go back via Tegernsee. You come back via Salzburg Autobahn which leads into the eastern Autobahn ring to the airport. Garmisch Autobahn ends at the busy internal ring road. Walter |

Driving from Munich to Insbruck
Hi
Thank you for answering to my questions. How did you do this: "Note: The author of this message requested that it not be archived. This message will be removed from Groups in 5 days (Dec 3, 10:25 am). " I would like to be able to do the some in some other newsgroups Thank you Jens Arne Maennig wrote: wrote: -what is the most recommended route on December 16, I would like to enjoy the scenery. No rush I'd simply take B11/B2 (German federal highways) and B117/B171 (Austrian federal highways) from Munich to Innsbruck. Make a stop in Benediktbeuern to visit the monastery (http://tinyurl.com/y3ls3g) and maybe in Kochel am See to see the interesting old hydroelectric power plant (http://tinyurl.com/y22sw7). Follow the nice pass road (Kesselbergstraße) up to Walchensee (http://tinyurl.com/y2j9jm), one of the largest and deepest German Alpine lakes with turquoise water. Personally, I'd make the little detour from Mittenwald via Leutasch to Seefeld, as I really love the landscape around Leutasch. Then down Zirler Berg to the Inn valley and you'll be arriving in Innsbruck after a few minutes. -what is the best choice for the way back ? For the way back, I'd follow Turan's Achensee suggestion. Too bad that Achenseebahn, Europe's oldest cog railroad will not be operating at that time of the year. It's always an experience. I am considering the fact that the returnig date is close to the Christmas and the roads may be busy at that time. I need to reach the Munich Airport by lunch time to take off. As you will still drive on the Autobahn most of the trip back, it will take you less than three hours even when you do not hurry. Jens |
