Default FT: Is the world falling out of love with US brands?

America the new Nazi Germany? Since when does America torture and kill
its political opponents at home, rig elections, engage in genocide at
home and abroad, and run a totalitarian state?

There is no need to read your posting further. America may be
neo-imperialist and otherwise nasty, but it is scarcely in a league
with the Nazis.

Joseph Nye, the Harvard academic who coined the phrase "soft power" to
describe indirect US influence in the world, likes to recall the dining
deliberations of a family in India to explain what he means.

Asked what attracts them to McDonald's, the middle-class parent she cites
suggest something more seductive than a Chicken Maharaja Mac and fries
cooked in vegetable fat. They say they want to take the children out "for a
slice of America".

When burgers can stir such emotional aspirations, it is no accident that 64
of the most valuable 100 global brands, as measured by Interbrand, are owned
by US companies. For more than half a century, the US and its products have
stood for progress, glamour and freedom in the minds of consumers around the
world.

I didn't stop eating Chinese food after the massacre at Tienanmen Square.

Is the FT running out of news material? A similar story was run by the
press here in Germany last year.

Is the US still enamoured with US Brands? From what I read, McDonalds has
had hard times recently. And I never understood why anyone ever drinks
Coca Cola - it tastes like gnats' p*ss.

'cos FT has a special relationship with FA.

FA prints the European edition of FT AFAIR.

A bit like UK brewed lager :-)

A fair comparison, apart from the colour! Jim Davidson, the well-known
Essex intellectual, once observed that the more foreign-sounding the name
of the lager in the UK, the greater the chance that it had been brewed
very near to the M6.
