News item on arrest figures of British tourists abroad-
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7553643.stm I've isolated here the number of visits and number of arrests. Interesting statistics- begs lots of meaningless questions I can't answer! Are tourists to France, Germany, Italy the Netherlands and Turkey particularly well behaved? Possibly! Country British visits (millions) Arrests Spain 17 2,032 France 14.8 153 US 6.5 1,415 Italy 3.5 38 Greece 3 230 Germany 2.37 162 Turkey 1.92 34 Netherlands 1.9 20 Cyprus 1.5 377 UAE 1.1 230 Thailand 0.86 141 Australia 0.7 47 India 0.6 46 Pakistan 0.28 19 Indonesia 0.14 18 Source: FCO -- (*) of the royal duchy of city south and deansgate -www.davidhorne.net (email address on website) "If people think God is interesting, the onus is on them to show that there is anything there to talk about. Who really knows, but I'd point out that, despite my 'headline' this is not just only tourists- but could include people living in the country who aren't citizens of that country. Hence why there is _such_ a large number of deaths in Spain- i.e. lots of retirees etc. Also, people visiting the US are likely to spend longer there than, say, NL. You'd need to see a breakdown for what peopple are arrested _for_ to get a little closer to what is actually happenning. -- (*) of the royal duchy of city south and deansgate -www.davidhorne.net (email address on website) "If people think God is interesting, the onus is on them to show that there is anything there to talk about. I would expect that in the more civilised countries most people manage this on their own (like I did). But in some countries (like Greece) it is much more difficult than it should be for the foreigner to get treatment. tim -- (*) of the royal duchy of city south and deansgate -www.davidhorne.net (email address on website) "If people think God is interesting, the onus is on them to show that there is anything there to talk about. These are arrest statistics- there are separate figure for consular assistance on the FCO website. They've said that such incidents have risen by a third in Spain in a year, which is quite remarkable. Maybe that's all down to drunks- you can't tell from the figures- other than by anecdote. Something like 700,000 UK citizens live in Spain (i.e. they are resident there most of the year)- the figure for the US is just a bit below that. -- (*) of the royal duchy of city south and deansgate -www.davidhorne.net (email address on website) "If people think God is interesting, the onus is on them to show that there is anything there to talk about.
