Vienna: meal cost?
Friend is going to Vienna for a week in early summer (Haydn Festival).
What should he budget for meals? Not necessarily gourmet, but at least something to edible to keep body and soul together. Thanks. |

Thanks. Have not returned there for 4 years - but overall experience is same as in all other major city: everything from fancy expensive (tourist) places with average quality/quantity to some small, cheap places offering huge portions of good food. My best food experiences in Vienna were recommendations from hotel staff. Was sent once to a small, hidden restaurant for "Vienner Schnitzel" - a 10 Euro menu turned out to soup, salad and 3 of the largest schnitzel I ever saw with rice and french fries, and got withouth asking alu-foil for carrying the remaining schnitzel back to the hotel ...... |

I have been successful in having a proper meal with a drink for around EUR10 this year. You have to avoid the touristy areas, difficult to do if you are sightseeing. A large pizza is about EUR10 too, so with drinks that's about EUR6-7. If you order a 400ml drink that can be shared. The Fast food places should come to about the same, but you should be really on a tight budget to go to Vienna and have fast food. -R. |
