Default Sicily in August

Hi,

We have a week in Sicily in the middle of August, but we have no idea where
to go. It seems like we picked the wrong time to go there when we look at
hotel prices and availiability, but we have no choice.
We are arriving by train from Rome, and are looking for nice scenery and
maybe a day or two at a beach.

The places we originally had planned to go, like Taormina, seems to be way
too expensive at this time, so we are looking for nice places off the beaten
track.

Any tips?

-HH

Middle August is holiday time for all people, in Italy, so prices rise
up and find a room to sleep is difficult.

Taormina I think is the highest priced place to stay, in Sicily, so I
imagine how high are prices in middle August :-(.
Train is not a very good way to go in Sicily from Rome.
I hope you chose a good train and reserved places (better sleeping cars).
Often trains to Sicily, beyond Naples, becomes very slow and with old
carriages (no air conditioning at all).
Better way is to climb down in Naples and take the night ferry to Palermo.
Sicily is very very good, and you will find many good places to see and
to stay in.
You can go south in the eastern coast to Siracusa and/or Noto (both good
for monuments and for beaches), or go west to Palermo/Trapani, or maybe
southwest to Agrigento.
I like very much little islands: from Milazzo you can go to 'Eolie'
islands, like Lipari, Salina or Stromboli, and from Trapani you can go
to 'Egadi' islands, like Favignana (good beaches).
You can visit them also on a daily trip, or stay there few days...

A rented car is a good help I think: trains as seen before are not very
useful there, except to Palermo and Catania.

Ciao, Piero.

Cefalu might be nice for you, it's on the northern coast. It's pretty
touristic, but, it is small. And has some swell history.

And I'm not sure the OP would want to drive in either of those cities!
