Our trip to Ireland
We were in Ireland May 13 - 27. Rented a car and traveled on our own to
Tralee, Killarney, Cork, Tipparery, Cahir, Cashel, Carlow, Adare, Abbeyfeale, Limerick, Ennis, Burren Area, Black Head, etc. We went to Dingle and the Ring of Kerry also. Had a wonderful time, despite weather being cool and rainy most of the time. We had a few periods of wonderful sunshine. We visited two cousins while there. Didn't have any trouble with driving on the left side and liked the round abouts. We think they are a better thing than intersections with traffic lights. What a beautiful country and full of friendly, warm people!!!! |

Didn't have any trouble with driving on the left side and liked the round abouts. its not that hard driving on the opposite side , is it? As long as you have the suitable car (driving left hand drive in Ireland would be horrible). -- Mike Reid Walk-eat-photos UK "http://www.fellwalk.co.uk" -- you can email us@ this site Walk-eat-photos Spain "http://www.fell-walker.co.uk" -- dontuse@ all, it's a spamtrap |

As I'm left handed I would imagine changing gear with my right hand would be tricky. |

I've never driven a manual transmission car on the wrong side of the road. There isn't a wrong side, only national conventions! As I'm left handed I would imagine changing gear with my right hand would be tricky. I'm left handed too and don't find using the right at all difficult. The main issues is looking for oncoming traffic in the right place. -- Mike Reid Walk-eat-photos UK "http://www.fellwalk.co.uk" -- you can email us@ this site Walk-eat-photos Spain "http://www.fell-walker.co.uk" -- dontuse@ all, it's a spamtrap |

As long as you have the suitable car (driving left hand drive in Ireland would be horrible). I've never driven a manual transmission car on the wrong side of the road. As I'm left handed I would imagine changing gear with my right hand would be tricky. I am left handed and switching gears by the right hand isn't a bit tricky. It turns to be tricky when controls are in the other side of the car one has learned to use them. For instance for the Brits using their right hand to change gears would be a nuisance because their neural system says that use the left (wrong) hand instead. The opposite applies to the other Europeans (and Americans). Therefore if a driver is cruising by a car registered to a country where controls are in the different side he is accustomed to, he better pick up a car with an automatic gearbox if possible. |

Having the stick shift on the side other than you are used to is not a problem. As long as you are comfortable using a manual shift. Don www.donwiss.com (e-mail link at home page bottom). |

It is true that I am an old dog and don't adapt to fundamental changes as quickly as young drivers. First time in my life I drove a car in a country (Thailand) in which traffic plies on the left. I had a car with an automatic transmission and yet my right hand changed a virtual gear beside the right door. This occured only a couple of times though. I can imagine how it would have been if the car had had a manual gearbox. In Asia (and in Australia) they have controls of lights (on the right stick) and wipers (on the left stick) in the opposite order from what Europeans and Americans are used to. So, during the first day when I was driving out from Bangkok to Chantaburi the weather was sunny and hot. Almost every time I was about change lanes I switched the wipers on and then turned them off and switched the blinkers on instead. This happened less frequently later. But my backbone never quite learned it during the 32 day trip. When I was alert I "remembered" which stick to operate but after a night's sleep I found that I am not yet at the end of the learning curve. Perhaps my backbone has become more intelligent now and next time would be easier in this respect. |

So you're a ****ed _old_ fart then? both my wife and I have problems with the gear stick in a RHD, when sober. Not like you to have something go over your head! Don't think for a minute that it did. I didn't add the last two words for nothing.
