campervan, car & 4wd in australia NT
Hello everyone!
I've planned to travel from darwin to ayers rock, I'll arrive in Darwin on august 23rd in the late evening and leave from ayers rock on september the 4th. I have some doubts about the rent of a car/campervan, that is I don't know if it would be better to stay in darwin a couple of days and then rent a campervan to alice (where I would rent a 4wd to ayers rock...they tell you cannot reach it only with it, is it true?!?) or rent since the very first day a campervan and going from place to place... the travel plan would be (saying it briefly): darwin - a couple of national parks around there and a few more things to see - kakadu - stuart highway to alice stopping a couple of times on the way - alice - ayers rock What do you suggest? Is it necessary to rent a 4wd to reach ayers rock? Some other suggestions (for instance a suggested renting company)? thanks a lot, Matteo |

I made a bit of a mess...
I meant they say you can reach ayers rock from alice only by 4wd, is that true? ....and moreover, in the two days I would spend in darwin I'd rent a car and go and visit the surroundings going back to sleep in darwin at night. hope it's a bit clearer thanks again, Matteo |

People take minis, campers, motor homes, buses, bicycles, fords,
motorcycles, 2wd, 4wd and even on a number of trips there have been outboards on trailers in the carpark. The road is good blacktop all the way, http://www.ayersrockaccom.com/ methinks they dost protest too much -- _ wrote in message ups.com... I made a bit of a mess... hi Matteo
Pleanty of normal hire cars between Alice and the Rock. You can do day trips from Darwin however they could be long and tiring, there are places you can stay in Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks, That way you can really experience the landscape. cheers Jeff http://community.webshots.com/user/surfoz wrote in message ups.com... Necessary to rent a 4wd - NO!!!!
Frankly - where a 4wd is necessary, few drivers are skilled enough to operate one!! Driving a 4wd in rough stuff is a special skill! wrote in message oups.com... Hello everyone! Thanks a lot to all of you for your answers!
I understand that even going to kings canyon should not be a problem using a normal car or a camper, right? ciao, Matteo |
