I used ACE a few years back, found them very satisfactory, and a number of
newsgroup posters here have also commented that they would recommend them.
Cars aren't new, but were well maintained and the prices were very fair
compared with the large multinationals.

Thank you vey much for the info

just came back from NZ.
i used ezy rental.
i compared a few companies, and ezy quoted the best price.
hassle free and responsive service.
cars are not great (i got a late 90s nisssan pulsar automatic), but does

the
job.

I plan in driving around for 4 months, are they up to the task?

thanks for the info

If you hire one from the smaller companies, watch out for these:

- quite a few don't include a proper CDW coverage - when I was in NZ I was
forced to rent a car from a small company (everything else being booked

out).
Their policy was to charge you up to 1000 NZD if it was you who caused any
damage to the car, above that you were covered (this didn't refer to third

party
damage).

Is that the one where you can reduce your excess by paying an extra NZD/day?
Since it's an older car, is any previous damage listed somewhere? Or do you
just have to take some pictures of the car before taking off?

- They never mentioned it and it was in the small print on the back side

of the
contract: they refused to grant any insurance at all on the road to

Milford
Sound. Why this is so, I don't know (the road is good), but I was happy to

find
out only after I came back from Milford. That way, at least I didn't have

any
worries during my stay there. ;-)

That's one of the roads I plan on taking too :-)

Have a good time in NZ,

I'll try to. :-)

thank you very much

Normally the only 'road' banned is the Ninety Mile Beach (which, perversely,
in true NZ fashion) is a gazetted 'highway'! The Milford Sound road is a
fully sealed, very well engineered and fairly busy highway - can't imagine
any sane operator forbidding its use!

Check out a few NZ web sites. NZ is a well regulated society. You'll strike
no misleading behaviour there from dodgy operators. What you read on the web
sites is what you'll get!

Nope, most agencies have that policy, but the one I used did not.

Should not be necessary as they do write down all visible damage before you sign
the contract. And you can point out anything you notice and ask them to put that
down, too. Of course, if a photo makes you feel more secure, go ahead.
