Default retirement visa?

As i have read, we can apply for a retirement visa at the age of 54 .

One of the things we have to do, is to bring sufficient money to prove that
we can support our own, and to be sure we have a annual income of +/- 50.000
aud a year.

My question is: do we have the flexibility to invest the money as we want,
or do we have to follow certain rules?

thx for the help!
