No metro and bus strike on Friday
http://www.flandersnews.be/cm/flande...19_metro_et_al
No metro and bus strike on Friday Thu 19/04/07 - Friday's metro, tram and bus strike in Brussels has been averted. On Wednesday drivers of the Brussels local transport company MIVB agreed to management proposals for a pay increase. MIVB drivers will receive a 30 euro a month pay rise. It will be backdated to the beginning of the year. The drivers are insisting that they first receive the management's proposals written down on paper before they shelve their plans for a strike for good. The unions stress that the strike plans have merely been suspended for the time-being. More security The drivers' strike may have been averted security officers on the Brussels local transport network have downed tools. The strike is not having any serious impact on the travelling public. (PhotoNews) The security officers are protesting against rising violence on the trams, buses and metros of the capital. They say that the management has not complied with earlier promises. Security officers have been waiting for new security equipment and clothing for months. Moreover, new staff have not been taken on like the management promised. The situation is compounded by the fact that the transport company will start a full night bus service on Friday. New metro trains The Brussels local transport company on Wednesday presented its new metro trains to the public. (Belga) The new trains are called Boas and are intended to increase capacity on the underground. The new vehicles were manufactured in Spain by CAF. They cost 120 million euros a piece. Each train can carry 700 passengers. The new vehicles are not divided up into individual carriages. This means that the travelling public is able to move through the entire train without any hindrance. This should enhance the feeling of security on the underground. The new trains will operate from June on line 1B between Stockel and Erasmus. As a result more, older trains will run on line 2. |
