Bicycle helmets -- Are they mandatory in Europe

I conclude that while the helmets are not legally required in Europe,
you are likely more safe to be wearing one than not wearing one.

Now, for me, I have to decide on the risk/reward question of: Is the
additional safety provided worth transporting (or buying locally) a
bicycle helmet for what will likely be a sum total of less than 50km
riding over 2 months.

After my wife crashed last year on a small hill when a tire failed. We
always wear helmets now. She luckily did not get hurt, and did not have a
helmet, but we saw how easy it was to have an accident that had great
potential to cause head injury.

In some European countries they are a legal requirement for cyclists.

That's less than 1km a day. You could probably walk that, though your
head wouldn't necessarily be any safer.
