WWF: China waste destroying HK wetland reserve
I only post this story because RichAsianKid did visit HK wetland
reserve in Jan 2007. I can say that it's not exactly a wetland reserve. It's surrounded by all these buildings and it's really just like a city theme park. But there again, even with its inauspicious start, China's waste is already threatening to destroy any remnant of it. Incredible! * * * * * * http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/new...s/s1858814.htm China waste destroying HK wetland reserve: WWF Last Updated 28/02/2007, 02:22:51 The wildlife conservation agency WWF says an important reserve for migratory birds in Hong Kong is being polluted by industrial and organic waste from China. The manager of the Mai Po reserve, Lew Young, says sewage, farm waste and industrial pollution is flowing into the reserve's wetlands, located on Hong Kong's northwestern tip and a short distance from the mainland city of Shenzhen. Mr Young says the problem has grown worse with rapid urbanisation in Shenzhen, and is threatening the survival of endangered water birds such as the black-face spoonbill. Pollution experts say around 52 billion tonnes of mostly untreated waste are discharged into rivers in China every year, polluting waterways and coastal seawater. |
