I don't know if EVA has upgraded all of their fleet yet, but I flew on one
of their A330's with PTV's a couple of weeks ago. Not only do they have a
bigger screen and more choices, the PTV's work on demand, so you can pause,
fast-forward, or rewind the movie or program. Also, the video game
selection and Map choices have been expanded. Awesome.

I believe that NW A330's also have the PTV's, but not sure if they are
on-demand like EVA. NW 747's do not have PTV's.

United has PTV's in economy on the 777's, but not on-demand. Usually
there's 6 movies and some other programming available. United 747's do not
have PTV's in economy.

Last time I flew JAL, there was no PTV's in economy.

I refuse to fly on China Airlines so don't know about PTV's in economy.

Air Canada has PTVs on its 340-500s, and is in the process of outfitting
its remaining intl fleet with them since it emerged from bankrupcy. Not
sure what percentage of planes have bene done so far.

I don't know about the particular route asked about here, but I thought all
JAL 747s and MD-11s now had personal TVs in economy class.

You might also want to look into spending a bit more and considering Eva's
"Evergreen Deluxe" which gives you a wider seat and more legroom, for not
that much more than economy class prices. For a long trip it might be well
worth it.

Bear in mind that IFE's (especially personal TV screens) do marginally
increase the risk of flying. The Swissair crash in the late 1990s was
probably caused by sparking in the wiring for the personal TVs.
Furthermore, the boxes for the electronics that make these things work
tend to eat into your leg-room.

I shall be flying to China on Lufthansa in a few days -- one factor in
my choice of airline was that Lufthansa do NOT have personal TVs.
