Default speaking to a friend

I understand it is possible to speak to some one in another country
through a computer. I am not very good with the technology. Is there any
one that does this between Australia and the United States? I have a
very good friend in Brisbane who uses iprimus as his web provider, I am
on MSN Webtv. I would buy a pc if I could call my friend using the
computer. Long distance is kind of expensive and we have a lot to talk
about. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Visted Oz in
October, was there 30 years ago, had a great time, great country,
thanks, Rich

Currently I only pay about 8 cents/minute to phone from the USA to
Australia, so I've never bothered with internet phone setups. There are
plenty of long distance operators in the US that offer very cheap
overseas call rates.

You can use Messager to speak to your friend, you and your friends just
need PC and Internet.

Skype (http://www.skype.com) is what I use. It is a piece of software
that allows you to call other Skype users (free) or landlines / mobile
numbers around the world. It has very good international rates
(http://www.skype.com/products/skypeout/rates/) where you buy SkypeOut
credits to call landlines / mobiles. If your friend uses the software
too you can chat for free in the same way you can text-chat on MSN. All
you require is a computer with internet connection, the free Skype
software and a headset with mic.

Or download a program called Skype. It seems to be the most popular, and now
the latest version is extremely good for video if you want to see as well as
talk to each other. I have used skype computer to computer to several
countries - all perfect. Personally I haven't had much sucess with computer
to telephone calls. Even though they're very cheap, I wouldn't bother. But
computer to computer works brilliantly. Get a set of headphones with
microphone if you haven't got these. Very inexpensive, and away you go.
Don't let anyone talk you into a voip phone which plugs into usb port. They
are much dearer and no better than the cheap mike and headphone sets.
Cheapest I have found in N.Z. is from the warehouse for $9.95, and they are
excellent. A webcam is a little more expensive if you want video as well. Or
you may already have a digital camera that will do the same thing.

You can get the program he it's free.

P.S. It is possible to just purchase a microphone and use the existing
speakers on your computer - but I wouldn't advise that as you will probably
get feedback.

And ADSL or cable. Don't even think about it on dial-up.

MSN is pretty good of using the latest version (7.5 I think).

I use it from Aus to NZ with voice and video okay. Slight echo/delay but for
free calls its worth it. Great if yoru both useing broadband.

Hello Richard,

Similar to "skype" is the freesofware from VOIPBUSTER (www.voipbuster.com)
only difference is that to some countries it's totally free to call.

Just give it a try!

And, if you add a webcam with microphone, you can see and hear each other.

It works well for me with yahoo messenger.

While you are chatting, you can easily exchange files and photos.

Best of all, there is no extra cost on top of what you pay to access the
internet.
