Travelling the East Coast
Hi all,
I will be travelling the East Coast in July with a friend and we are trying to figure out wich is the best way to do it. We have about 15 days and the rough masterplan is Melbourne-Sydney-Brisbane. We checked online for cheap car hires but, although the rental is not crazy expensive, when it comes to insurance excess reduction liability prices become not affordable anymore. Right now we are looking for travel passes through the rail-coach network and we found this Backtracker pass from CountryLink which doesn't sound too bad (14 days illimited travel on CountryLink rail and coach network for 232AUD). Anyone of you have any experience/suggestion about this? Is the CountryLink network good? Are there any other passes from other companies more convenient? Thanks a bunch! Vale Countrylink is the only rail company in country NSW. It's just the modern name for the old NSWGR (New South Wales Government Railways). The section from Sydney to Brisbane is reasonably scenic - spectacularly so in some spots - and there are a multitude of interesting towns with different attractions to stop over at. I travelled from Pottsville to Taree on it a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately the Pottsville to Casino section is now a bus, (I wrote about the closing of that section here http://loraltraveloz.blogspot.com/20...t-railway.html but the train was comfortable and clean although the services now are fairly basic. No more dining car, just a take-away food and sandwich bar. The Melbourne-Sydney train route is less scenic but still interesting, and certainly more interesting than the bus route. Incidentally, check to see if the ticket would include a side trip to Canberra. What sort of towns and sights would you be interested in as stopovers? Travelling the East Coast
A hire car is definitely the best way to travel. You see more, you
waste less time, you have a wider choice of places to stay, etc. Two people sharing a hire car would probably be cheaper than the combined fares for 2 people. The cheapest way to cover your car rental excess is to take out normal travel insurance. Depending on the company there is usually about $3000 of cover for car rental excess. It works out a lot cheaper and you get all the other cover as well (loss of luggage, medical, etc). The disadvantage is that if you do have an accident you will be charged directly and you will then have to claim that from your travel insurance company. Getting travel insurance directly from the web may be cheaper than going through a travel agent. have a look at http://www.1cover.com.au/ I've used them but never had to claim from them. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Apr 9, 9:48 pm, "vale" wrote: Hi all, I will be travelling the East Coast in July with a friend and we are trying to figure out wich is the best way to do it.
