Oooh. That sounds like it swings it.

would certainly be worth spending a night or two in.

It's gotta be one...

I take it the standard Brisbane - Sydney ticket doesn't allow
stopovers and I need two separate bookings?

Can be on the one booking, but not sure if they still apply the old
"break of journey permitted, to be completed within a month" rule or
not.

Have you considered one of the passes which they offer? It *might*
(but only *might*) work out slightly cheaper, if they insist on you
paying sector fares.

Don't only think about Coffs Harbour, check out a few other places on
the Nrth Coast, near Kempsey, Nambucca Heads, Macksville, and so on.
Sawtell is nice, just far enough out of Coffs to be quiet yet close
enough that you can get there quickly (and cheaply if using cabs or
buses).

Thinking of doing this next month. Anyone done it?
Day trip or overnight more interesting? How expensive
is the food and drink on board?

Thanks for the tips. I looked at www.countrylink.com.au and it offered
an overnight trip via Casino. Yes, I've found the menu on that site now
and compared to UK prices - for 9 AUD for a meal it doesn't *have* to be
more than mediocre.

The overnight service is actually a bus service to Casino, picking up
the train there. The day service is a through train.

I myself would get the day train, unless you intend to pay for a
sleeping berth, then and only then would I use te night service.

Probably will work out cheaper as, unless they've changed it, you also got
a discount on the passes for being a foreign tourist. Just had to show
your passport and possibly the entry stamp. Can't remember now.

Contact them. They used to have a special ticket for
non-Australians (passport needed) that allowed multiple
breaks of journey without penalty.

"East Coast Discovery Pass"? It's more expensive than two singles.

But thanks.

As mentioned, they *used* to allow a break of journey as long as the
overall trip was completed within a certain time frame.

Perhaps if you popped into the aus.rail newsgroup, they may be able to
answer your question in there?
