Suggestion for first time cruiser as to what size of ship I should go with?
A medium size or larger (3500+ passnegers) size ship?

please list the negatives and positives to both types of ships?

I am considering a cruise either in Alaska, Carribean, Mexican Riveria,
Hawaii

I would suggest something other than a megaship, perhaps 40-80,000
tons. You will have difficulty finding your way around on your first
cruise.

Just avoid any Carnival cruise(unless you'd enjoy bunny-hopping around the
pool!)

I bunny-hopped around the pools on Star and Sun Princess PRE Carnival
take-over.

What a crock. Mega-ships can be adventures in and of themselves. When
was the last time you went to Disney World and could claim to know
everything and see everything?

I'll take a mega-ship anyday, especially in a place like Alaska where there
won't be a lot of sunning near the pool. So, I want to be able to explore and
discover new areas of the ship everyday. More nooks and crannies on a larger
ship.

First of all, there was plenty of sunning by the partially-covered pool the
first week of August in Alaska last summer. I was there, sunning and using the
Jacuzzi. Even the open-air aft pool area was pleasant. Shorts and T-shirts
were just fine for excursions in Ketchikan, Sitka, etc. It was HOT a couple of
the days. It was very warm in Anchorage. You can't count on weather like
that, but you need to pack for it, just in case.

Alaska is the LAST place a mega-ship makes sense. Alaska is the thing to
explore, not a ship. And you won't get around to all the nooks and crannies of
even medium ships like the Statendam class. We didn't. We never got around to
watching a movie in the Wajang theater, never had a cup of the free Java at the
Java cafe. We were out on deck most of the time. There's really a lot to see
and do in Alaska. Even if you stay on the ship, you'll need to be outdoors in
case a bald eagle decides to do a fly-by.

Having said that, if the cruise is a round-trip from San Francisco (our home
port, same as yours), then a larger ship makes sense for some folks for
exploration on the days going up and down the coast. But to fly to Seattle or
Vancouver and then take a mega-ship for Alaska seems like a waste of money to
me. when you can pay a great deal less on those ships for itineraries that
don't require a flight and/or pre-cruise hotel.

In the case of those who live in Northern California, the Sapphire Princess and
her round trip cruises to Mexico come to mind.
