First time travel - Thailand

However, I have never seen a "drug scene" there (I don't know whether this is what you are saying about it though). There is a fairly significant drug scene there. It is one of the places that people go to get X, pot, etc. Look at the backpacker or druggie discussion groups, or threads here in Usenet where someone asks "Can I get X in Thailand" and they always point people to KSR. Absolutely not. The KSR is full of undercover cops, and no one would dare buy from a Thai there (and no Thai dealer would sell there). As for the foreigners, most of them have just gotten off (or are about to get back on) the plane and have nothing on them. If people are looking for drugs, they might go to KSR to meet people who could hook them up, but they wouldn't buy there or use there. The full moon parties have gotten much stricter policing lately also. |

If there is no drug problem there, if that is not one of the centers of drug trafficking to farang in Thailand, why is the place full of undercover cops looking for drug activity? OK, they may not use there but they go there to "hook up" as you phrase it. So the place is crawling with druggies looking to "hook up". Why would you want to go there if the place is infested with those types (and "infested" is a pretty accurate word)? |

If there is no drug problem there, if that is not one of the centers of drug trafficking to farang in Thailand, why is the place full of undercover cops looking for drug activity? It may have been a more open drug dealing scene in the past (like the full moon party was before the crackdowns), or they may just take that precaution at any area in the country that attracts a large number of backpackers. OK, they may not use there but they go there to "hook up" as you phrase it. So the place is crawling with druggies looking to "hook up". Not at all. The place has a huge number of young backpackers, who represent a total cross section of the backpacking community. Now, out of that backpacking community there are definitely some people who use drugs, but it isn't the norm by any means, and if you don't actively seek the drug scene out you almost certainly won't find it. I'm told a lot of the drug tourism has moved to Laos and Cambodia now that Thailand is a lot stricter. Why would you want to go there if the place is infested with those types (and "infested" is a pretty accurate word)? I'd rather be around backpackers than sex tourists any day. You meet people from all over the world and from many walks of life who backpack, and many of them are quite well-traveled, and are a good source for both travel advice and travel stories, as well as possible travel companions. |

However, I have never seen a "drug scene" there (I don't know whether this is what you are saying about it though). There is a fairly significant drug scene there. The locals are well aware of the situation. The middle class Thai avoid the place. __________________________________________________ _________________ What the middle class Thais do is their business. Let's put it this way then: I have never used drugs in Khao San (nor anywhere else). Nobody has ever approached me in any business related with drugs. I cannot point anyone who has been intoxicated from pot but on the other hand how should I know under what "recreational substances" other folks are influenced. This very strip is very cosy. I have never felt anyhow intimidated or harrassed. I have not spent much time at Khao San. A couple of times I have arrived in there in afternoon to rent a computer for a while and to have a couple of beers while I dine. |
