If you are looking for the lowest fares, TPA and RSW both have excellent
service on several discount carriers. I've also heard that some serve PIE,
but your options are limited there. SRQ is probably the least convenient
option, and probably the most expensive. You will have to change planes
somewhere, possibly at TPA. If you can get a nonstop into TPA, and you
almost always can, that is your best option since the travel time you lose
by driving the extra 50 miles will be made up in not having to transfer.

Ok... Definitely need lowest fare, as this will be a quick trip to help my DS
decide which school he is going to this fall (It's between Savannah and
Sarasota). He's seen Savannah, and likes it, but has been accepted to both.
If anyone happens to *personally* know anything about RSAD (Ringling School of
Art and Design), please email me...
TIA!

Well, USA 3000 flies round trip once a day from ORD to PIE. If it fits your
needs, you can get a round trip fare for $133.70. To see what other
airlines serve this market, go to
http://www.smarterliving.com/air/schedules/ and search by either cities or
airport codes.

Tampa is the best bet for selection, but St Pete/Clearwater has an

airport
as well. (PIE). ATA operates nonstops from Midway (MDW) for very little
money. Sarasota is just across the bridge from St Pete.

When you say *just across the bridge*, Mike... How far in miles? Do you

happen
to know if any airlines fly in to there from O'Hare???

That sounds extremely doable, and reasonable, as well. NOW... my kid tells me
that he doesn't think he needs to visit, as his AP art teachers told him that
it was no contest between Sarasota and Savannah... Sarasota wins. Ahhhh...
KIDS!

Have you tried orbitz? About 6 months ago I had to make some urgent
travel plans and I got the best deal booking through them. I wasn't
going to the Sarasota area but I assume you might have the same luck
as I did. Good luck and I hope you find something.

Looking for airports (and airport codes) in Sarasota area. Also need travel
distance info... Need to make a quick trip to the area, without spending a
bundle. Any suggestions?

I almost always look at Orbitz first, then go to the airline's own website and
book there. Most of the time, I can easily save a few bucks that way...
Since dates are not a factor in this case, I went to Travelocity first, to look
for lowest fares, on any dates in the next couple months, but most are still
pretty high. If I could only get my son to make a commitment....

I certainly like the way Deal Detector is set up on Orbitz. Unfortunately,
with respect to Travelocity, my experience has been the opposite from yours.
Although I haven't been able to verify this for sure, the current theory is
that (bulk) email sent from Orbitz/Deal Detector is identified as spam by my
ISP and the fare message never gets to my mailbox. Has anyone else had this
experience?

I haven't been happy with Travelocity in a long time. I've found the
deal detector works great on orbitz if dates are not an issue.

Good luck getting your son to make a commitment

Thanks, Becky.. He DID make a decision, and will be going to Ringling in the
fall, sight unseen. There's still a chance we may take a trip out there to see
his housing options, but the deadline is coming up soon, so it would have to be
a great deal...

Glad to hear that about your son. Did you take a look at that deal
detector? Good luck finding housing. Keep me posted.
