Tue 06/01/09 17:27 (UPDATE video) - Last night was the coldest night
in Belgium since 1999. At 4:00 AM it was minus 19 degrees celsius in
places.

Despite the freezing cold, there were no major traffic problems during
the rush hour this morning. The sanders were out early to sand
motorways and other roads.

The traffic department is keeping an eye on developments and changes
in the weather conditions affecting the roads.

According to the authorities most of the motorways are snow and ice-
free. No new snow fell last night so the services only had the
freezing cold to contend with.

Worst this morning were the technical problems. The emergency road
services had many calls from people unable to start their cars this
morning.
(Belga)

Train service is also riding with little problem in Flanders. There
were some delays on the Kortrijk (West Flanders) - Denderleeuw line
and the Leuven (Flemish Brabant) - Ottignies line in Wallonia.

Activity at Brussels Airport is also running according to schedule.
"As long as there is no new snowfall, the cold can easily be contended
with," said spokesman Jan Van der Cruysse.

Freezing cold temperatures are also expected tonight, though not quite
as cold.

I suppose that's pretty rough when you're not used to it. In the middle
of a large continent north of 45 degrees north latitude, it's not
particularly unusual. I have clothing for weather like that. We had a
morning like that a couple days ago.

Errm...try riding a regular motorbike when it snows and freezes, and
find out how little excellent clothing helps.
