Sun 22/03/09 17:33 (UPDATE video) - In Mechelen the cultural festival 'City Visions' kicked off Saturday in style amidst celebrations, fireworks, music and other festivities. For three months the city will be host to many exhibitions, performances, concerts, and film and theatre pieces. This year Mechelen is celebrating the 450th anniversary since it became an archdiocese. Mechelen was proclaimed the Archdiocese of Mechelen in 1559. At the time the Archdiocese covered most of the Low Countries (the southern part of The Netherlands, Belgium and part of Northern France). (VRT) To commemorate the 450th anniversary the city is holding a three month cultural festival entitled City Visions. The organisers want to focus on the role of Mechelen in the past, now and going towards the future. The streets and squares of Mechelen were filled Saturday afternoon with fanfares and other music groups. Crowds stayed outside enjoying the festivities and the early spring weather. There were also many activities inside on the first day of the three month festival. 'All that is solid melts into the air' is an exhibition of modern art put together by the curators of the MuHKA Museum of Modern Art. Saturday evening the festivities continue with fanfares and brass bands (some 200 musicians in total) playing on the Fish Market, along the River Scheldt. They played an ode written by Dutch composer Dick Van der Harst. After that the musicians and spectators moved to the Market Square of Mechelen for a huge open air spectacle with firework and music by the French group Les Commandes Percu, the German light artist Luxx, and Ephémère. View of the city from the skywalk On Saturday morning the panoramic platform above the Saint Rombouts Cathedral in Mechelen was opened. The skywalk enables people to admire the marvellous view from one of Flanders' most beautiful landmarks. The skywalk that has a glass floor was erected at a height of 92 metres. The first day of the cultural festival City Visions ended with fireworks from the tower of the Saint Rombouts Cathedral.
